Eating Enough Calories to Lose Weight

Okay, so I’ve been researching weight loss tips (for those that personally know me….it’s not for me! ). One of the things that I ran across was NOT eating ENOUGH calories. Yep you heard right, NOT eating ENOUGH calories.

Did you know when you don’t eat enough calories that your body will go into starvation mode? I use to think not eating at all or eating once a day would do that to you. But you can consume 1,200 calories a day and your body will go into starvation mode.

WHY?

I’m sure all of you hear the words cut your calories you will lose weight, but did you know that you constantly burn calories throughout the day with just your normal day to day activities (sleeping, eating, breathing, walking, etc…)? Even when you’re sitting you burn calories (don’t get to happy…you don’t burn VERY many calories in this state). If you opt to eat only 1200 calories a day and your body is constantly burning calories you can easily burn the calories you’ve consumed, hence your body goes into starvation mode!

The majority of your calories should be consumed during breakfast. That does not mean eating a giant muffin followed by a big glass of milk (although milk is awesome and I highly recommend it for those who can drink it). You need to carefully chose what you eat. Make sure you have enough calories, protein, fat, carbs, fiber, etc… And of course cut back on the sugar (hence why the muffin would not be a good idea, among other reasons!)

Oh and don’t be fooled by the “low fat”, “1/3 less calories”, and whatever other catchy line the pastry companies throw at you to convince you to eat their weight gaining products for breakfast!

Until next time, practice HAPPY and HEALTHY EATING!
